Man Beard puzzle: Andre Agassi

Is Andre Agassi a Man Beard?

This ESPN commentary says that Agassi finished his tennis career "manfully" and includes a picture of young Andre's brash beard. He is very wealthy, a little crazy, and he sometimes looks like a pirate.

The challenge of trying to assess his worthiness for Man Beard status is that he changed so much over the years. For example, he has a long history of facial hair, but recently he's been totally clean shaven. So that's a strike against him I guess.

Another strike would be that his irrational exuberance probably peaked over 15 years ago, but on the other hand his divinity has steadily increased to the point where he's now a full-blooded tennis deity.

Artistic creativity is an important Man Beard trait that he exhibited in abundance in his early years with his outrageous attire. His garb has been more conventional lately, but does artistic creativity ever really go away? I suspect it has stayed with him but taken on new forms.

So I put the question to the Man Beard readers. Is Andre Agassi a Man Beard? Justify your response.

Great question. Since I am currently bearded I think I have to vote and I'll go with yes.

He was the wild child of the tennis world for a long time to the point that his irrational exuberance almost got the best of him. To correct the problem he got rid of Brooke Sheilds (divorcing your wife and mother of your child(ren) has to count for something here, although I don't recall who initiated the divorce).

I can't lie, I am put off a bit by how far he has gone in the other direction (away from irrationality). But he is a tennis god as you pointed out, the masses bowed to him in NY last week.

If there was a lower tier of man beards I'd put him in there, but since I've never known Man Beard Blog to do anything half ass, I know this is an all-or-nothing decision.

I give him my endorsement.

i'm a dude, trust me said...

i'd be appalled at the suggestion if a) i didn't have man love for agassi and b) i wasn't afraid of the repurcussions of naysaying an official Man Beard Blog potential.

mike makes several good points: 1. putting bitches in their place is key to Man Beardedness 2. Man Beard Blog nevers half-heartedly commits to an endorsement.

that being said, i cannot agree with mike in giving andre a gold star. i feel we must stay the course. be true to the intent of the law, the Man Beard Law.

i can't support a man who, with pathetic tears streaming down his hairless cheeks says:

"The scoreboard says I lost today, but what the scoreboard doesn't say is what it is I have found. Over the last 21 years I have found loyalty; you have pulled for me on the court and also in life. I have found inspiration. You have willed me to succeed, sometimes even in my lowest moments. And I have found generosity. You have given me your shoulders to stand on to reach for my dreams; dreams I could never have reached without you. Over the the last 21 years I have found you and I will take you and the memory of you with me for the rest of my life."

what the fuck?

he's thisclose to selling his story to Lifetime.

is that Celine Dion singing in the background?

my god.

so, while i understand the fascination and the desire to find a right tribute to this amazing Man, i do not think Man Beard Blog is for Andre Agassi. and Agassi is certainly not for Man Beard Blog.

This is the toughest decison I'll ever have to make. Here's the real question for me, is there such thing as a mature Man Beard? He displayed so many amazing Man Beard qualities in his youth, such as looking like a pirate and banging celebrities, that he had to be considered a Man Beard. So did he simply lose his Man Beard qualities? I say no, I say Andre Agassi is so confident in his Man Beard awesome that he doesn't even need to prove what a Man Beard he is; therefore, I vote yes, Andre Agassi is a Man Beard.

I read somewhere that these things make a man-beard:

beards (this is #1)
stomping queers
piracy
irrational exuberance
testicles
money
putting women in their place
artistic creativity
regicide
divinity

I think Andre A was very creative and also irrationally exuberant. but i dont consider him a man beard. for me his man-bearded-ness was secondary. when i think of AA, i dont think of beards. i would have to check the exact numbers, but i dont even know what % of his life he had a beard. if you compare him to the list of other man beards i think having a beard is one of the first things that comes to mind (along with those other traits that are common with MB's.)

i think of 80's hair and an emotional competitor who loves the Canon Rebel camera.

he doesnt do it for me in man-beard world. he is only an honorable mention for me.

Despite his exceptional irrational exuberance, I must wholeheartedly veto Andre Agassi's nomination to the Man Beard pantheon.

For a true Man Beard, Image, is, in fact the nothing. Not everything. True Man Beards (see specifically Mel Gibson and Saddam Hussein) don't care about image.

Were you to start "Tennis Beard Blog", I suppose you could honor Agassi there. But he doesn't belong here.

It has been decided that Andre Agassi is not and never was a Man Beard, though he does have the respect of Man Beard Blog. Not every All-Star makes the Hall of Fame. Andre had some great great moments, but his qualifications fall short in the end. I think it was summed up best here:

[i can't support a man who, with pathetic tears streaming down his hairless cheeks says:

what the fuck?]

Excellent contributions from everyone. Beard scratches all around.

He is clearly a homo. The second picture on the blog clearly proves this. He could only be a Man Beard if he stomped himself.
